Rattlesnake Run 2014 – August 24

Tweet “I love waking up in the morning not knowing what’s gonna happen or who I’m gonna meet, where I’m gonna wind up.” -
Jack in “Titanic”   This is going to be a good day. My new CPAP machine arrived via UPS yesterday and I got a solid 8 hours of rest. There is no rain in the forecast for the next few days and temperature is projected to be…

Rattlesnake Run 2014 – August 20

Tweet Great Spirit, Maker of All Life.  A warrior goes to you swift and straight as an arrow shot into the sum.  Welcome him and let him take his place at the council fire of my people.  He is Unas, my son.  Tell them to be patient and ask death for speed; for they are all there but one – I, Chingachgook – Last of the Mohicans – James Fenimore…

Rattlesnake Run 2014 – August 19

Tweet “History, like love, is so apt to surround her heroes with an atmosphere of imaginary brightness.” ― James Fenimore Cooper, The Last of the Mohicans   I caught a break for a change! Usually when I enter Canada they enjoy giving me a cavity search. This time I got a smile and ‘Welcome’ to Canada. The ride from Port Huron to Niagara Falls was downright cold. I was tempted…

Tweet Sleep my friend, and you will see that dream is my reality. – James Hetfield The alarm nudged me out of bed at 5:00 am so that I could enjoy the sound of pouring rain and hail.  Not a good omen to the start of a trip.  Since I packed the bike the evening before it was time to do some repacking and get the rain gear out.  All…

Tweet “I try to stay in a constant state of confusion just because of the expression it leaves on my face.” ― Johnny Depp   I continue to be amazed by Wisconsin’s hidden beauty and last evening was no exception.  Through the wonders of GPS finding some of these rustic gems is getting easier.  I plotted a course that would land me on Spring Valley Road in Walworth County, sent…

Where the Tar Snakes Wander

Tweet “It is a well-documented fact that guys will not ask for directions. This is a biological thing. This is why it takes several million sperm cells… to locate a female egg, despite the fact that the egg is, relative to them, the size of Wisconsin.” – Dave Barry   I love Wisconsin!  Wisconsinites have some of the best riding anywhere, you can venture down along the Mississippi, ride the great…

Tweet “Go to a cemetery for the scenery. After you die, go back to the cemetery to become one with nature.” ― Jarod Kintz,   The day started out overcast and cold. As I climbed in the saddle I felt a chill run up my backside. 50 Degrees may not sound cold but when you are traveling at 75mph down the highway it is. I threw on another coat and…

Rustic Road 60 – Vilas County

Tweet “There are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot.” ― Aldo Leopold Did you ever have a favorite ride (road not girl), one that always reinvigorates your inner being and makes you feel like you are floating along the road? A ride you never get sick of? For me that is R-60 This is one of my favorite roads. Fortunately for me it is only a 35-mile jaunt and I can be on it anytime. It is best in the morning or after a thunderstorm when the ozone is still fresh in the air. As you leave Boulder Junction on County Road M, you will come upon R-60 or Hwy K. There is amazing tree cover throughout the entire ride. Part of the road runs…

Rustic Road 78 – Lincoln County

Tweet “There are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot.” ― Aldo Leopold The best way to find the start of this route is to take Hwy 107/64 West out of Merrill.  Several miles out you will come to a junction with County Road E, follow this until you come to the Rustic Road sign which is Tesch Road.  The first ½ mile is tarmac and in good condition, this is where it gets interesting; at this point the road becomes loose gavel or rotten granite as it is called in this area.  This crap is not my favorite to ride on, however, I view this as a learning moment.  Before this ride was done I would learn a great deal. At the start of the…

Rustic Road Project

Tweet Yesterday launched a new riding project.  We are fortunate in WI to have many great roads designated by the State as Rustic.  By DOT definition to qualify for the Rustic Road Program: Should have outstanding natural features along its borders such as rugged terrain, native vegetation, native wildlife, or include open areas with agricultural vistas which singly or in combination uniquely set this road apart from other roads. Should be a lightly traveled local access road, one which serves the adjacent property owners and those wishing to travel by auto, bicycle, or hiking for purposes of recreational enjoyment of its rustic features. Should be not one scheduled nor anticipated from major improvements which would change its rustic characteristics. Should have, preferably, a minimum length of 2 miles and, where…
